Jalapeno Publishing offers professional editing services for prospective, current, and past clients. We offer a variety of editing services and packages. We are also happy to customize our services to fit your unique needs and circumstances. Because we specialize in working with new authors and those planning to self publish, our rates are some of the lowest in the business. Our goal is to help our clients create their best work while on a budget.
Edits are typically done in Microsoft Word with Track Changes, so you will be able to see and approve all changes. Of course, if you would prefer to have your edits done another way, we are happy to discuss this and will do our best to accommodate you. By request, we will do a sample edit of your manuscript if we have not worked together before. This is a free service, designed to show you what an editor can do for you. A sample edit will typically involve editing 1-3 pages of your manuscript, depending on the total manuscript length.
Please feel free to contact us at editor@jalapenopublishing.com for more information.

ProofreadingThe most basic editing service. This involves checking for punctuation, grammatical, and spelling errors and ensuring consistency throughout the text.
Our standard rate: $3.00 per page** Rate for friends*: $1.50 per page** |
Copyediting/Line-by-Line EditingThe most commonly requested editing service. Copyediting involves proofreading the text, in addition to a more detailed analysis of its content. This service will look for accuracy, consistency, and overall flow of writing. Sentence structure, word choice, and ease of reading will also be assessed. I will leave questions, comments, and general impressions in the document as I go through the manuscript, so you can get a feel for what readers may be thinking as they read your story.
Our standard rate: $4.00 per page** Rate for friends*: $2.50 per page** |
Developmental EditingThe most extensive, in-depth editing service. It involves rewriting/rearranging sections and working in detail with the author to improve the quality of the text and story. For fiction pieces, this often entails a focus on plot and character development, dramatic themes, and overall stylistic concerns. For this particular editing service, I work collaboratively with the author and will send back multiple drafts until the desired finished project is achieved. This also includes everything under proofreading and copyediting.
Our standard rate: $7.50 per page** Rate for friends*: $5.00 per page** |
*Rate For Friends - is our unique offer for every contributor and partner with either Jalapeño Publishing or the Scaffolding Magazine. When you sign a contract with us, you receive a certificate that qualifies you to use this rate. The offer is unlimited in number of uses and in time.
**Rather than charge by the hour, I have found most of my clients prefer to know up front how much editing their manuscript will cost. Therefore, I charge by the page. The industry standard for a page is 250 words. To figure out your exact page count, divide your word count by 250. You do not have to worry about submitting the manuscript in a specific font or style, as I will calculate payment based on this 250-word standard.
